Recent Beauty Finds

For those of you that know me it’s no surprise that the majority of my play money goes to beauty products. For those of you that don’t know me, I have an irrational obsession with makeup and all things that beautify, brighten and highlight. Whether I am going for natural, no makeup, makeup or full blown smoky eye and red lip, I love it all. Not to mention all the wonderfully packaged and totally helpful concoctions on the market that create a clear and perfect palette (aka – the face) in which to create a masterpiece.

So, when Sephora finally opened in Charleston a couple weeks ago I was there on opening day with bells on. All the pretty colors and packages made me swoon. Alas, I had items in mind that I had been eyeing on Sephora.com and waited to purchase until the store opened up. Here are a few things I picked up…

1. Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit – That Glow

Attachment-1Attachment-1 (1)Attachment-1 (2)

So, the first time I swatched these colors on my hand I thought there was way too much saturation and I would look like Tinkerbell with these highlighters on my face. …especially the Sunburst. But, I read some reviews and people said they were fantastic; so, I took a fabulous blush brush (#3 in this post), lightly dabbed it in the Sunburst and swiped it along the tops of my cheeks to the temple. The results were all “Look at me glowing like I just got back from a tropical vacation in St. Barths. Aren’t you jealous?!?” And the other colors were just as lush worthy. But, that Sunburst really is my fave. Here are a couple heavy swipes for you all to see the color. Remember, they don’t come out this way when you use lightly on the face. Cross my heart.

Verdict – Buy it! At $40 for 4, high quality bronzers this set is totally worth it. Paired with a barely there foundation/BB cream, nude-pink lipgloss and a swipe of mascara any of these highlighters would take your look to the next level.

2. Make up Forever – Artist Palette Volume 3 – Florals

This was one of those eye shadow palettes that I passed over online because it looked really bright and unwearable. When I saw it in person it was an immediate eye-catcher. I happily added it to my shopping bag. The colors are so fun for summer and can be worn lightly if you want a barely there look or super bold. Here are swatches of all the colors with the bottom right color in the palette starting at the top of my arm.

A quick look at some of these colors swiped on the eye:

Verdict: If you like fun eye shadow colors or want to experiment a bit, go for it! The color payoff is amazing. They are all very well pigmented and have great staying power. At $44 for 9 eye shadows this is a great deal.

3. Too Faced Mr. Right – The Perfect Powder Brush

IMG_0263

The name of this brush says it all. It really is the right brush for applying blush, highlighter and powder. The bristles are soft and shaped perfectly to apply color to the apple of the cheek. Plus, it’s absolutely adorable. I also like that the bristles are black so you can see how much color you are picking up.

Verdict: For $36 this isn’t a cheap-o brush. If you need a new blush brush and want one that is high quality, then I say go for it. But, this isn’t one to add to your collection if you already have a blush/highlighter brush that you love.

Keep it lush y’all!

When I was in college I used to think business travel was so glamorous.  You get to go out to fabulous dinners with smart/interesting clients, stay in great hotels and see more of the country and world.  All of that on someone else’s dime?? Sounds fabulous!  The first business trip I took was to Austin and it was fabulous.  I was working with really cool people, got to set my own schedule and loved getting to see Austin.  Since then the glamour has somewhat worn off.  There are long hours of being “On” and expense limits (say goodbye to the $15 glass of wine and $40 steak).  It throws off your routine and makes it hard to stick to healthy habits.  Not to mention missing the people you’ve left at home.  Since travel is a part of my job, I have learned to embrace it and have found some apps that make things a little easier.  Hope these help you too!

gg

Gate Guru

This app will tell you what restaurants and stores are in each terminal of an airport.  So when you have a layover in Atlanta and want to get something yummy (I recommend Varasanos in Terminal C) you can easily find which terminal to go to!

deltDelta App

I know this one seems kinda obvious but I don’t think everyone takes advantage of all Delta offers.  As an Atlanta Native, I love Delta.  I irrationally get a little upset when I hear people slamming on Delta.  I’m always on the app to move my seat to the front of the plane, the closer to the front exit the better.  Did you know that if your flight is delayed, even by 10 minutes, you can change you flight to a different time for free?  That can really come in handy if you were trying to get on an earlier flight or wanting to stay an extra day without incurring extra fees.  I’m also constantly checking how many miles I have and how close I am to having status (anyone else do this??).  Seeing all the miles I’m racking up helps quell the annoyance of traveling for work!

Flight Stats Flight stats is great when you need to know your options of flights scheduled for a particular day.  Lets say your client meeting ends 5 hours earlier than you’d planned so you want to see if there are earlier flights on Delta to get on.  Flight Stats will easily give you that info.  Also great if you’re picking someone up from the airport.  It will let you know exactly when and where they land/delays/early arrivals etc.

yelpYelp

I kind of love eating alone in a city where no one knows me.  I don’t see myself going out to dinner alone in Atlanta (what if I ran into someone?? Horror!) but I do enjoy it when I travel and I really like to try local favorites.  With the ratings, reviews and map functionality in the Yelp app I am able to easily pick out the best options near wherever I happen to be.

pcPodcasts

Inevitably, with any sort of travel, there is a lot of waiting/sitting around.  The PodCasts app on my iphone is the easiest way to get caught up on all my favorite podcasts (more to come on that next week) and discover others I don’t currently subscribe to.  They don’t require too much focus like a book on tape does but keeps me engaged and entertained until I get where I am going.

Honorable mention: Uber, Audible, Concur (if your company uses concur the app is pretty helpful)

xoxo, Annie

Favorite snack as a child?

  • Maggie: My mom used to put butter on Krispy Kreme donuts and microwave them for just a few seconds. HEAVEN.
  • Annie: Fruit roll ups for sure… I would sneak them from the pantry
  • Victoria: Fruit rolls ups. I would wrap them around my fingers and eat it off. So good.

You’re stuck on an Island for a month and can only eat 3 foods, what would they be?

  • Maggie: The above mentioned Krispy Kreme donuts, peanut butter ice cream, and this pasta minus the chicken.
  • Annie: Bagels, French Fries and steak yummm
  • Victoria: French fries, tropical fruit (mango, coconut, papaya, etc. give me the dang fruit bowl on the Tropicana woman’s head) and bone-in t-bone steak.

Go to alcoholic beverage?

  • Maggie: Dirty Martini
  • Annie: Glass of chardonnay with a cube of ice
  • Victoria: Red Wine preferably a high quality cabernet.

  • Annie: Maybe Target too.. good one Mags!
  • Victoria: Nordstrom, hands down.

What actor/actress would you have play you in a movie about your life?

  • Maggie: I’d like to think a brunette Jennifer Lawrence
  • Annie: Charlotte from Sex and the City… whats her name again? Kristen something

  • Victoria: We both started on the same day at the same company we still work for today. Four years later we were married!

Favorite breakfast?

  • Maggie: Biscuits and Gravy. I actually had my mom made me a huge batch of this the morning of my induction with Lucy, because if it was going to be my last meal, I wanted it to be good. I was obviously terrified to give birth and overly dramatic…more on that later I’m sure.
  • Annie: Scrambled eggs with bacon and an everything bagel on the side.  With LOTs of coffee.  Maybe I should have included coffee as one of my 3 foods on the island…!
  • Victoria: Three Little Birds Cafe Triple Berry Pancakes with veggie sausage and an Americano with a dash of cinnamon and cream

You can only have 2 makeup items for the rest of your life, what would they be?

Biggest irrational fear?

  • Maggie: Flying, my epidural not working, no one being around when I’m vomiting and a lung comes out, Lucy not having friends at daycare….I am a bit of worrier
  • Annie: maybe heights?  When I was little I was terrified of cracks in the pavement.  Luckily I grew out of that one J
  • Victoria: Suddenly losing all control over my body and falling off a high ledge/mountain.

Most used app on your phone?

  • Maggie: I’d like to be cool and say Spotify, but it is probably Instagram
  • Annie: Snapchat!
  • Victoria: Bloglovin. It’s the best!

Costa Rica

Okay ladies and gents. Lets talk travel. I have always loved a good stamp in the ol’ passport. It makes me feel accomplished and fulfilled. That’s one more place I have been, seen, walked, experienced. I guess you could say I have a travel bucket list. And honestly, there isn’t one place in this world that isn’t on it. So, I try to travel as much as life allows. Most donald view = costa ricarecently the hubs and I ventured to Costa Rica with some of our friends. A couple of the dudes on the trip had traveled to Costa Rica plenty of times before and had great ideas on the best part of the country to call home for a week. Dominical was the destination we chose – about 3 and 1/2 hours southwest of the San Jose airport. Seven total travelers in our group called for two SUVs with 4 wheel drive. Driving is a bit cray cray in Costa Rica and the roads can be rough at times; so, 4 wheel drive is a definite must have. With a stop at the Mercado half way through our drive to our final destination we were well stocked with the essentials – chips, salsa, beer and all the ingredients for endless pain killers. Seven full days of wonderful bliss ahead of us. And folks, that’s exactly what we got.

After a bit of back and forth with all of our friends we made the decision to stay at Puertocito Point (about 7 minute drive past Dominical). This property is great for budget travelers! It was large enough for our group and had an amazing view of the ocean. While the main living area didn’t have air conditioning (which is normal in most properties in Costa Rica) all the bedrooms are equipped with their own units. The main house has 2 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, huge living area and glass, sliding doors from ceiling to floor. The guest house has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a miniature living area and kitchen. Truth be told, I would recommend this property just for the main house. We encountered a few issues with the guest house. Not that it wasn’t nice; but, the air conditioning unit was finicky and trust me when I say that cold air is a hot (no pun intended) commodity.

Okay, so onto the to-dos. Costa Rica offers quite an abundance of excursions and fun things to do if you want to break away from the beach/pool for a bit. Our group decided on zip lining with the wonderful amigos over at Osa Canopy Tour. I am quite a scaredy cat of heights; so, this was a stretch for me. But, hey, peer pressure is a bitch. So, there I was among my friends in this atrocious, but safe and secure, harness and helmet. Two thumbs up for not falling to a tragic death!!zip lining Totally worth it guys. Overcome your fears and do this! If I can, you can….buh-lieve me.

There are also many waterfalls and wildlife in Costa Rica. Did you know Costa Rica makes the list of top 20 countries with the most biodiversity monkeysin the world?!? It’s crazy cool. And you will see and hear these critters from your porch. Capuchin monkey’s are everywhere! If you see a car pulled over on the side of the road, follow suit. It usually means there are some cool creatures lurking above in the trees (ie: Toucan Sam).

Costa Rica is all about living in the moment and enjoying the raw beauty. Dominical, and neighboring towns are not built up. You won’t find a Target around here peeps. So, get ready for being off the grid and experiencing some serious visual orgasms. Oh, and don’t forget to pack the suntan lotion and sunglasses.

Pura Vida.

Go-To Weeknight Recipes

As a girl with a full-time job and a 1.5 year old at home, It’ s a constant battle to convince myself to make dinner and not go out/order in. We are all exhausted when we get home and would rather not spend our time standing over a stove, but rather going on a family bike ride or splashing with Lucy in her kiddie pool. Oh and now that I’m pregnant on top of all that….lets just say I’ve been turning to delivery more than what I would call a normal amount. Not only does that typically result in eating food that is not that great for you, it also hurts the wallet. So, in order to make sure we stay in and cook I have a few go-to weekday dinners that are super easy, quick and always a hit:

BLT s – I know. Super obvious right? Well I feel like we need a reminder that these bad boys exist and can be done in tons of creative ways. I like to add avocado, make a spicy mayo with sriracha, add some pesto, use spinach and arugula instead of iceberg lettuce..the possibilities are endless!

Veggie wraps – These are on constant rotation at my house. We get the green spinach wraps and put inside feta cheese, black olives, avocado, pesto, spinach. Sometimes I also just fold these into quesadillas if I’m feeling extra lazy. Note: definitely heat these up. I do it on the stove but you can do it in the microwave too I’m sure.

Fettuccine Alfredo – My husband constantly asks for this. I try to make it a little healthier with whole wheat noodles, but it’s definitely a glutenous meal. My favorite recipe for the alfredo sauce is from Giada De Laurentiis (click here). We have tried tons of recipes and this is the best. It is light and lemony, which I love. Also, if your current fettuccine alfredo includes jarred sauce….just stop! This is SO EASY and tastes SO MUCH better. Note: Sometimes I also like to put spinach and/or cooked bacon in it to add a little something extra.

Quiche – You can literally put about anything you have into a Quiche. Just mix with 6 eggs, half a cup of sour cream, and some cheese and you are good to go. My current favorite mixture is with sautéed bacon, onions, spinach and cauliflower. Sometimes I put it in a pie crust and sometimes I don’t, but it’s always delicious and easy.

I hope these help make your life a little easier. And, don’t forget that all of these meals are so simple your husband can also make them. 🙂

-Maggie
